The Origin of Electrolysis

Electrolysis was first discovered by an ophthalmologist, Dr Charles Michel, in 1875.  Dr. Michel was trying to remove ingrown eyelashes on some of his patients.  Dr. Michel developed the first direct current machine to permanently remove the hairs.

How Electrolysis Works

The treatment involves inserting a sterile probe, needle, into the hair follicle all the way to the, Dermal Papilla.  The Dermal Papilla is the target area for the electrologist.   This area contains blood and nerves and feeds the growing hair.  When the Papilla and the regenerative cells surrounding the papilla are destroyed the hair will die.  Electrolysis involves a series of treatments over a period of time to completely eliminate the hair.  The length of time in treatment is directly related to the length of time a person has been waxing, plucking or threading the hairs in a given treatment area.  These TEMPORARY methods of hair removal distort the hair root and increase blood supply which cause thicker, coarser hairs to be in place.

Methods of Electrolysis at Sanborn’s Electrolysis Clinic

Galvanic Electrolysis

This is the oldest method; it utilizes direct current to create a chemical reaction in the hair follicle that destroys the Dermal Papilla.

Thermolysis

This method uses high frequency current to produce heat in the area.  The heat cauterizes and destroys the Dermal Papilla.

 Blend

The BLEND METHOD combines both currents together in the same probe. The thermolysis enhances the galvanic process to produce a faster correction.

Causes of unwanted Hair

  • Heredity

  • Normal physiological changes

  • Malfunctions of the Endocrine system

  • Medications

  • Topical influences

  • Stress

Puberty pregnancy and menopause can cause excess hair growth in women.  During a persons life systemic changes cause variations in hormone production.  The various hormone imbalances can cause unwanted hair growth.

Malfunctions in the Endocrine glands can trigger the growth of unwanted hair.  Various diseases of the ovaries, pituitary gland, adrenal gland and the Thyroid gland are responsible for much excess hair growth.

Medications can also influence extra hair growth.  Some of the culprits are cortisone, some high blood pressure medications, birth control pills and some seizure drugs.

Stress can stimulate the Adrenal glands to produce hormones that can cause fine, soft body hair to suddenly become coarse.

When people do the temporary processes of shaving or waxing, the hairs can become infected.  Sometimes, mainly on a mans neck or chin, or woman's  bikini line, the hairs grow back at such a very shallow angle they become ingrown and infected.
